BACHELOR
This project is a multifunctional building structure that contains three types of housing, different types of business, social and cultural institutions as well as green urban spaces. The multifunctionality is about optimizing the space and creating new communities. With a focus on the human scale, architecture is creating a quality of life and social interaction between people. The architectural quality is about perspective and how the urban space and the building are experienced purely functional as well as aesthetically.
The housing situation in Copenhagen has grown worse over the years. Despite a high record of newly built solutions, it has not solved the shortage of housing. Although public housing must help to ensure that Copenhagen remains a city for all, it is unfortunately seen that new buildings are too large and expensive for ordinary citizens. The intention of public housing is to accommodate weaker families and persons. That is why there is an increased need for smaller and cheaper housing. The local authority has the desire to create a balance between private and general construction. We would like to help solve these issues in our proposal by building a multifunctional building.
We consider sustainability from three aspects: The environmental, the social, and the economic aspects. We have focused on these aspects in connection with the design of the building, the choice of materials, the design principles, and the construction process itself. The exterior of the building consists of a green plastered facade combined with slate roofs. The facade and insulation create a durable climate shield, which provides a comfortable indoor climate, longer life for the load-bearing construction, higher fire safety, and a shorter construction process. We have used a unique form of natural slate with solar cells, which also helps with a universal climate shield. Despite the high price, a slate is considered an investment due to its longevity.
The area around the site consists primarily of creative professions and institutions such as art studios, workshops, schools, and cultural institutions such as the opera. A new water park and a shared food market are being built on Papirøen. Christiania is also a recreational area located close to the site. Papirøen, Christiania, and the Danish Opera House are popular places for tourists and together they create a triangle of social, and cultural institutions in the area. The idea is to create a new area with different kinds of shops, grocery stores, restaurants, take-away places, cafes, a hostel or hotel, an extension of the School of Architecture with workshops and other creative professions such as art studios.
Under the small apartments is an extension of the Academy of Arts for Architecture, Design, and Conservation. The extension includes workshops, auditoriums, showrooms, pop-up shops, etc. This is created with a desire to design a creative environment that invites outsiders inside: A form of transparency that allows people walking by to follow the processes and projects behind the facade. It is possible to start pop-up shops where students can rent or make exhibitions or sell their products. There are researcher residences among the students' dwellings, which also can be used by guest lecturers at the school. It should make it easier and more attractive for foreign professors and lecturers to visit the school.
SMALL APARTMENTS
There has also been an urgent need for student housing as more and more students are admitted to the universities in Copenhagen. Since 2010, the number of students has risen by 50%, and 65,000 new students are struggling to enter the housing market. With too few dorms and student housing and extremely high housing prices, students are struggling to enter the housing market. The local authority in Copenhagen has the desire to build 4,000 student housing by 2020. Our project is an example of how we can solve the problem with small apartments, focusing on functional solutions and minimal waste of space.
FAMILY APARTMENTS
There are 16 family apartments: 150 square meters and on 3 levels. They have their own exit to the raised outdoor space, which is shared with the public housing, and they have access to their own roof terrace.
